Statement of Objection to the Arrest of Immigrant Workers in Massachusetts
We, the members and associates of the Barnstable MA Democratic Town Committee, strongly object to recent raids by ICE and other Federal agents here on Cape Cod and the Islands. Individuals have again been arrested with no notice, transparency or due process as required by our laws and our Constitution.
These individuals were targeted and detained without any opportunity to consult with legal representation. Such actions are not only unjust but counterproductive, undermining our shared values of fairness, due process, and human dignity. Immigrant workers are essential contributors to our communities and local economies—especially in regions like Cape Cod and the Islands where labor shortages are acute and seasonal industries rely on a lawful and willing workforce.
The use of immigration enforcement tactics that target individuals en route to work—without cause, transparency, or respect for legal status—sows fear and instability, not only among immigrants but also among employers, families, and communities. These arrests threaten our Commonwealth’s commitment to inclusion and respect for the rule of law.
We call upon our state and federal authorities to immediately:
-
ï‚· Provide a full and transparent account of these arrests.
-
ï‚· Ensure that all individuals with valid work authorization are treated in accordance with their rights under the law.
-
ï‚· Cease practices that criminalize legal presence or impede lawful employment.
-
ï‚· Affirm the role of Massachusetts as a state that upholds human rights, economicresilience, and community integrity
-
 In Massachusetts, act on pending legislation such as the Safe Communities Act (S1681) and others in process
Massachusetts must not allow fear or overreach to compromise the basic rights and safety of those who contribute daily to the well-being of our Commonwealth.
We urge all elected officials, regardless of party, to condemn these actions and stand firmly in support of justice, transparency, and the lawful treatment of immigrant workers.
Sincerely,
Barnstable (MA) Democratic Town Committee
